Your tasks: Back to Young Writers On-Line home page

     1.  Make a collection of interesting short articles from your local or other newspapers.

2.     Look at the way the articles are written. Take note of the style used such as:

  • the length of the sentences

  • the length of the paragraphs

  • the use of quotes from people interviewed in the article

     3.     Keep a record of your observations about the articles

4.     Read this list of funny (but real) headlines and select one. 

  • Write the article that could go with the headline

  • Include a quote from one person mentioned in the article

  • Publish the article with the headline as you would for a newspaper

  • Send a copy to your writing mentor by fax or email for feedback

5.     Your final task is to write an article for your local newspaper on an item of local interest.

  • You will need to interview at least one person involved in the event

  • Write a list of questions to use in the interview

  • Write the article and include quotes from your interviewee

  • Suggest an appropriate headline

  • Send a copy to your writing mentor by fax or by email and also send a copy to Cathy
