Your tasks:                                 Back to Young Writers On-Line home page

1.     Read many poems. You may find them in books in the library or on the web from the following addresses.

2.     Make a collection of 5 that you really like. Copy them into a computer file

3.   Write a few sentences about  what you specifically like about the poems you have selected and send this to your writing mentor. You may need to send a copy of the poems to your mentor as well.

Some features that you may find interesting in some of the poems are

  • use of figurative language, images the author creates

  • the rhyming pattern used

  • the lack of rhyme

  • the rhythm of the poem

  • alliteration

  • onomatopoeia

  • the topic selected

  • the type of poem it is

  • the structure of the poem

  • the way the poem sounds when read aloud

Print this page or copy it and make a new version on your computer. Use it to organise your information before sending it to your writing mentor by fax or email.

4.     Look at the web sites listed and select one that you will use to help you write some poems. The first three are particularly useful.

Don't forget to bookmark the sites that you are going to use so you can get back to them easily.

5.     Using one or more of the web sites, follow the activities to create your own poems. As you are working on these, you can send them to your writing mentor for assistance and feedback.
6.     Your final task is to publish your collection of poems in either hard copy or on a computer and then send your poetry portfolio to your writing mentor and also to Cathy at the District Office. These will be published on the district web site.
